This week I’m all about the new single Remix (I Like The) by New Kids on the Block. Initially, when I heard Remix I wasn’t wild about it—but sometimes a song just needs a little time to grow on you.
With the release of the music video last week my lukewarm response to the song changed. Remix is elevated by the cool styling of the video. The music video shows an ignored young woman who decides to break out of her shell and transform herself. The five guys of NKOTB are singing the song at a hip backyard party. They are all dressed in slim blue suits that match the feel and style of the song. Remix has a distinct retro vibe, and I love the use of the steel guitar in the hook and the strong percussion throughout the track.
Donnie Walhberg and Joey McIntyre share the lead vocals in this track. Donnie doesn’t have the strongest voice in the group, yet on this track the imperfections and slight gravel in his voice add a depth to the song.
I have been a fan of New Kids on the Block since I was a teenager, and no one was more excited than me when they decided to reunite in 2008. Remix (I Like The) is their first single off their album 10 that is scheduled for release in April. I hope that their new music continues to follow this modern trend and does not fall into the trap of most boy bands of cheesy love songs and ballads.
